Trapped in Lebanon’s Conflict: The Plight of Nepalese Migrants – Help Us Bring Them Hope

Lebanon’s ongoing war has created a distressing reality for migrants including Nepalese
stranded in war-torn Beirut. These women, caught in the crossfire of war and systemic
exploitation, face unimaginable challenges daily. Among them is Maya, a domestic worker
who left Nepal 15 years ago, hoping to secure a better future for her children. Instead, she
found herself trapped in Lebanon’s restrictive Kafala system (where employer is the sponsor
and has right to control legal status, restrict job mobility and limit the ability to return home),
enduring years of abuse and exploitation. After leaving her employer, Maya became
undocumented, making it impossible to leave the country without paying hefty government
fees and navigating complex legal processes. Today, she lives in constant fear, with little
access to food, healthcare, or the means to escape the conflict zone.
The situation has grown even more critical. Recently, a fellow migrant from Ethiopia, only 37
years old, succumbed to a heart attack brought on by the unrelenting stress of living in
constant terror. She leaves behind two children without a father figure, adding to the tragedy.
Another migrant narrowly survived a bombing near her workplace. The stories of these
women are heartbreaking, and there may be more but only 21 have come into our contact for
the support they required. Many others are isolated or fearful to seek help.
Despite these extremely difficult circumstances, the resilience of these women is
extraordinary. They have formed informal networks to share limited resources and support
one another. But they cannot do this alone, they need immediate help to survive and process
to return home.
